A student from NESTON has been accepted to Rugby School Japan, a leading international boarding school. He faced challenges with British English in the Oxford test and interviews, but his hard work paid off.

Inspired by a summer program, he is preparing for his future abroad. He believes starting English early and making English-speaking friends are key to success. His experience at Neston has helped shape a strong global perspective.

NESTONの生徒が、名門ラグビー・スクール・ジャパンに合格した。試験ではオックスフォードテストや面接に挑み、特にイギリス英語に苦戦したが、努力の成果を発揮した。

サマープログラムでの体験をきっかけに入学を志望し、海外留学を視野に。早期の英語学習と英語を話す友人との交流が成長のカギとなった。NESTONでの経験も、国際的な視野を育む大きな原動力だと言えるだろう。

Part 1: Taking the First Step Toward a Challenge

Matthew:OK, well first off, congratulations on getting accepted to Rugby School Japan. I’m very proud of you—you did a very good job. How does it feel to pass the test?

A: I’m happy. I studied a lot, so I’m glad I passed. At first, I didn’t think I could, but I did it, so I’m really happy.

Matthew: I see, very good. What kind of test did you have to take?

A:There were three parts. First,I had an interview. I talked with Mr.Simon Palferman,Deputy Principal Pastoral. Then I took the Oxford Placement Test and CAT4 test.

Matthew:Very good. Which part was the most difficult?

A:The interview and the Oxford Placement Test were easy, but the CAT4 test was more difficult. 

Matthew:I understand. So why were you interested in going to Rugby School?

A:Because I joined their summer school before, and there were lots of good classes and activities. I had fun and learned a lot, so I thought I could have a great experience there.

Part 2: Learning English and Growing Up

Matthew: Now that the test is finished, was it easier or harder than you expected?

A:The interview and the Oxford Placement Test were easy, but the CAT4 test was more difficult. 

Matthew:You’re not going this year, right? You still have one more year in Kagawa?

A: Yeah. I’ll study more and take other exams before going.

Matthew: Are you excited?

A: Yes, but I think studying will be hard.

Matthew: I remember when we practiced the interview, there were questions about boarding school life. This will be your first time living away from home, right? How do you feel about that?

A: When I went to the summer school, my parents weren’t there, especially at night, so I felt nervous. But I made a lot of friends, and they taught me what to do. I think I’ll still be nervous, but I’ll be OK.

Matthew: That’s great. I also remember we looked at Wikipedia and saw some of the famous people who went to Rugby School. What do you think you can do in the future by going to this school?

A: I think I can have many great experiences. I’ll have good classes and play sports. I think it’ll be a good chance for me.

Matthew: And how did you feel about practicing at Neston? Was it helpful for your test?

A: Yes. I think talking with teachers was even harder than the Oxford test. But it helped a lot.

Matthew: If other students hear about you getting accepted and they also want to go to Rugby School, what advice would you give them?

A: I’d tell them to study a lot and to spend time learning British English.

Matthew: At what age do you think students should start studying English if they want to go abroad someday?

A: If they start at 9 or 10 years old, they can learn a lot of English. Also, it helps with reasoning and thinking in English.

Matthew: How old were you when you started studying at Neston?

A: I started when I was in Fuzoku Kindergarten.

Matthew: Do you feel like your English has improved since then?

A: Yes, definitely.

Matthew: What do you think is the most fun or the most useful thing about learning English at Neston?

A: I think it’s useful because I can go to other countries and talk with people there. I can have real conversations, and I can travel to many countries.

Matthew: That’s a great answer.

Part 3: Expanding Dreams and Looking Ahead

Matthew: Now that you’ll have all these new experiences at Rugby School, do you have any dreams or goals for the future?

A: I want to make lots of friends from different countries. I want to learn about their histories and cultures. I also want to travel a lot.

Matthew: Do you think you want to live in Japan forever, or do you want to live in another country?

A: I want to live in another country. I already know a lot about Japan, so I want to learn more about other places.

Matthew: Are you proud to be from Takamatsu and Kagawa?

A: Yes, I am.

Matthew: If you become very successful, would you like to help Kagawa and Takamatsu somehow?

A: Yes, I would.

Matthew: In your opinion, what’s the best way for students to become more confident in speaking English?

A: Make lots of English-speaking friends. If your friends speak English, then you’ll speak English too.

Matthew: Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me today. You did a great job. You’re not only hardworking, but you’re also a great listener. When a teacher tells you to change something, you do it quickly. That’s a strong skill—it means you’re adaptable and teachable. I think you can do very well in anything, whether it’s sports or academics. I look forward to seeing your future.

「夢へのパスポート：ラグビー・スクール・ジャパン合格者インタビュー」

Part 1: 挑戦への第一歩 

マシュー：まず最初に、ラグビー・スクール・ジャパンへの合格、本当におめでとうございます。とても誇りに思っています。よく頑張りましたね。合格した気持ちはどうですか？

A： 嬉しいです。たくさん勉強したので、合格できて良かったです。最初は無理だと思ってたけど、合格できて本当に嬉しいです。

マシュー： そうなんですね。どんなテストを受けたんですか？

A：試験は3つのパートがありました。まず最初に面接があり、副校長（生徒指導担当）のサイモン・パルファマン先生とお話ししました。

その後、オックスフォード・プレースメント・テストとCAT4テストを受けました。

マシュー： なるほど。一番難しかったのはどれですか？

A：面接とオックスフォード・プレースメント・テストは簡単でしたが、CAT4テストは少し難しかったです。

マシュー： そうだったんですね。どうしてラグビー・スクールに行きたいと思ったんですか？

A： サマースクールに行ったときに、楽しい授業やアクティビティがたくさんあって、すごく良い経験ができたからです。

Part 2: 英語学習と成長

マシュー： 今年すぐには行かないんですよね？香川でもう1年過ごすんですよね？

A： はい。その間にもっと勉強して、他の学校も受ける予定です。

マシュー： 楽しみですか？

A： はい、でも勉強は大変だと思います。

マシュー： 面接練習の時に、寮生活についての質問もありましたよね。寮で生活するのは初めてですよね？どう思いますか？

A： サマースクールのとき、両親がいないのは少し不安でした。でも友達がたくさんいて、色々教えてくれました。今はまだ少し緊張してるけど、大丈夫だと思います。

マシュー： それは良いですね。ウィキペディアで、昔ラグビー・スクールに通っていた有名な人たちを見たのを覚えていますか？学校に通うことで、将来どんなことができると思いますか？

A： たくさん良い経験ができると思います。授業もいいし、スポーツもできると思います。僕にとってすごく良いチャンスになると思います。

マシュー： ネストンでの面接練習は、テストの準備に役立ちましたか？

A： はい。先生と話すことは、オックスフォードのテストより難しかったけど、すごく役に立ちました。

マシュー： もし他の生徒が「ラグビー・スクールに行きたい」と思ったら、どんなアドバイスをしますか？

A： たくさん時間を使って勉強すること、そしてイギリス英語をたくさん知ることが大事だと思います。

マシュー： 海外留学や外国の大学を目指している子どもたちは、何歳くらいから英語を始めたほうが良いと思いますか？

A： 9歳か10歳くらいで始めれば、たくさん英語を覚えられると思います。英語で考える力も身につくと思います。

マシュー： Aくんは、何歳のときにネストンに来ましたか？

A： 附属幼稚園に入園した時から通い始めました。

マシュー： 英語は上手になったと感じますか？

A： はい、すごく上達したと思います。

マシュー： ネストンで英語を学ぶ中で、一番楽しいことや役に立ったことは何ですか？

A： 外国に行って、現地の人と英語で話せることが楽しいし役に立つと思います。たくさんの国に行けるのも嬉しいです。

マシュー： 素晴らしい答えですね。

Part 3: 広がる夢と未来

マシュー:ラグビー・スクールでいろんな経験をすると思いますが、将来の夢や目標はありますか？

A： いろんな国の友達を作って、その国の歴史や文化を学びたいです。そして、いろんな国を旅行したいです。

マシュー：
将来、日本に住み続けたいですか？それとも外国に住みたいですか？

A： 外国に住みたいです。日本のことはよく知っているので、他の国のことも知りたいです。

マシュー： 高松や香川出身であることに誇りを持っていますか？

A： はい、もちろんです。

マシュー： 将来成功したら、香川や高松に何か恩返ししたいと思いますか？

A： はい、したいです。

マシュー： 英語をもっと自信を持って話せるようになるには、どうしたらいいと思いますか？

A：英語を話す友達をたくさん作ることです。友達が英語を話していたら、自分も自然に英語を話すようになると思います。

マシュー： 今日はインタビューに来てくれて本当にありがとう。Aくんはとても努力家で、しかもリスニング力がすごく強いですね。英語だけでなく、先生のアドバイスをすぐに理解してすぐに直せる。その力はとても大きいです。それは、何をしても成功できる人の特徴です。スポーツでも、勉強でも、きっと素晴らしい成果を出せると思います。これからが楽しみです。
